Amrit Yonjan Tamang

Amrit Yonjan-Tamang is a renowned linguist in Nepal and wears many different hats.

He was a consultant, team leader, and lead trainers on different projects, research works, workshops, training, and in the development of education curriculum on mother tongue.

Foremost, he served as a thematic consultant in ILO Convention No. 169 on ‘Language, Education, Culture, and Media,’ to the ILO Office in Kathmandu.
He also served as a National Technical Advisor on the MLE program jointly initiated by the Ministry of Education (Government of Nepal) and Foreign Ministry, Government of Finland, and contributed a lot in developing educational materials for multi-lingual education.

He was involved in Orthography and Dictionary work for different linguistic groups of Nepal especially MLE piloting Districts – Kanchanpur, Palpa, Rasuwa, Dhankuta, Sunsari, and Jhapa and also supported to develop MLE Training Manual in 15 Mother Tongues with the National Centre for Educational Development (NCED), Government of Nepal.

He was appointed a member of National Language Policy and Recommendation Commission 2050 formed by the then His Majesty’s Government of Nepal, Ministry of Education, and Culture and also was the member of the Language committee and language development sub-committee, Language division under Nepal Academy and also led many other eminent committees formed in different dates for different policy recommendations.

He is also an author of nearly two dozen books on various issues of Nepalese indigenous peoples primarily on language, education, linguistic rights, and more.

He worked as a linguistics consultant for several I/NGOs, government institutions, IPOs and edited several books, journals, textbooks, text-materials and equally served as editor in chief of several Journals on indigenous peoples’ issues, magazines, newspapers, and more and also worked in Radio Nepal, a government-owned radio as Tamang news editor.

Besides these, he presented more than two dozen research papers, articles in district, national and international seminars and published in different magazines, journals, and books relating to ethnic culture, language, linguistics, and indigenous knowledge system.

He is currently affiliated with over a half-dozen indigenous peoples’ organizations assuming different positions namely– Indigenous Linguistics Society of Nepal, Tamang Language & Literature Council, Nepal Tamang Ghedung, Tilpung-Kathmandu Tamang Society to name a few.
