Prem Singh Tamang, widely known as P.S. Golay, was born on February 5, 1968, in Singling, West Sikkim, India. He comes from a modest background and has emerged as a significant figure in the political landscape of Sikkim. Golay completed his schooling in Sikkim and pursued further education at Darjeeling Government College.
P.S. Golay began his political journey with the Sikkim Sangram Parishad (SSP) in the late 1980s. He soon joined the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), led by Pawan Kumar Chamling, and became a key member of the party. Golay was elected to the Sikkim Legislative Assembly in 1994, representing the Soreng-Chakung constituency. His effective leadership and dedication to public service helped him secure re-election in subsequent terms.
During his tenure with the SDF, Golay held several ministerial portfolios, including:
In 2013, due to ideological differences and alleged autocratic functioning within the SDF, P.S. Golay parted ways with the party and founded the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM). The SKM aimed to address the grievances of the people and bring about political and social reforms in Sikkim. Under Golay’s leadership, the party rapidly gained popularity and emerged as a formidable opposition to the SDF.
In the 2019 Sikkim Legislative Assembly elections, the SKM won a majority of seats, ending the 25-year rule of the SDF. P.S. Golay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Sikkim on May 27, 2019. His tenure as Chief Minister has been marked by efforts to promote inclusive development, improve public services, and ensure transparent governance.
