Early Life and Education

Prem Singh Tamang, widely known as P.S. Golay, was born on February 5, 1968, in Singling, West Sikkim, India. He comes from a modest background and has emerged as a significant figure in the political landscape of Sikkim. Golay completed his schooling in Sikkim and pursued further education at Darjeeling Government College.

Early Political Career

P.S. Golay began his political journey with the Sikkim Sangram Parishad (SSP) in the late 1980s. He soon joined the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), led by Pawan Kumar Chamling, and became a key member of the party. Golay was elected to the Sikkim Legislative Assembly in 1994, representing the Soreng-Chakung constituency. His effective leadership and dedication to public service helped him secure re-election in subsequent terms.

Ministerial Roles

During his tenure with the SDF, Golay held several ministerial portfolios, including:

  • Minister for Animal Husbandry: Implemented various programs to enhance livestock development and support farmers.
  • Minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs: Worked to preserve and promote the rich cultural and religious heritage of Sikkim.
  • Minister for Industries: Focused on industrial growth and creating employment opportunities in the state.

Formation of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM)

In 2013, due to ideological differences and alleged autocratic functioning within the SDF, P.S. Golay parted ways with the party and founded the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM). The SKM aimed to address the grievances of the people and bring about political and social reforms in Sikkim. Under Golay’s leadership, the party rapidly gained popularity and emerged as a formidable opposition to the SDF.

Chief Minister of Sikkim

In the 2019 Sikkim Legislative Assembly elections, the SKM won a majority of seats, ending the 25-year rule of the SDF. P.S. Golay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Sikkim on May 27, 2019. His tenure as Chief Minister has been marked by efforts to promote inclusive development, improve public services, and ensure transparent governance.

Key Initiatives and Achievements

As Chief Minister, Golay has focused on several key initiatives:

  • Education: Launched programs to improve the quality of education, provide scholarships, and upgrade school infrastructure.
  • Healthcare: Strengthened healthcare facilities, introduced health insurance schemes, and improved access to medical services in rural areas.
  • Infrastructure: Undertook projects to enhance road connectivity, develop urban infrastructure, and promote sustainable tourism.
  • Agriculture: Implemented schemes to support farmers, promote organic farming, and boost agricultural productivity.
  • Youth and Women Empowerment: Introduced various initiatives to empower youth and women, including skill development programs and financial assistance schemes.

Personal Life

P.S. Golay is known for his approachable and down-to-earth demeanor. He graduated with a degree in Bachelors  of Arts  from Darjelling Government College in 1988. After graduation, he worked as a teacher in a state-run school. He is married to Krishna Rai. His son is politician Aditya Tamang,  who is also a member of Sikkim Legislative Assembly  from Soreng-Chakung.
